Our Tribe is proud to announce our return to our traditional name held sacred by our ancestors and now reclaimed for our future generations.

Restoring the name our Tribe never forgot

We have been known as Yuhaaviatam since the very beginning. It was not given to us by others, so it could never be taken away. It is a name with the power to honor our history, unite our people and inspire a brighter future for all.

Yuhaaviatam means “People of the Pines” in our Maara'yam (Serrano) language. Many generations of Yuhaaviatam have endured with the name as a reflection of our origins, our culture, and our history. It is a testament not only to how far our Tribe has come, but also the journey ahead. Our name will provide future generations of Yuhaaviatam the vision and courage to remain connected to our lands, our culture, and continue our ways.

From Band of Mission Indians to a sovereign Tribal nation

Long before the first Spanish explorers arrived, our ancestors lived high in the San Bernardino Mountains at Yuhaaviat, where pine trees covered the lands near present day Big Bear Lake. The “People of the Pines” were known as the Yuhaaviatam Clan of Maara’yam.

With the rise of the California Mission System followed by westward expansion of a new and growing country, our cherished Kiika’ (Tribal Leader), Santos Manuel led his people from their mountainous homelands into the San Bernardino Valley. As a result of colonization, our Tribe would come to be called the “San Manuel Band of Mission Indians.”

Today, our Tribe works to secure a future for our people and community while also improving our quality of life. Our actions also benefit our neighbors and Indian Country—all while staying true to our culture and traditions. In reclaiming our ancestral name, we not only celebrate our inherent sovereignty but honor the gift and responsibilities bestowed upon us by our Creator.
