Fire Department Internship

16 and 17 Year Old Tribal Internship Program

Earn valuable experience through a 10-week internship for students ages 16-17. Along with our Tribal Professional Development Program, we are proud to offer this unique opportunity with support from our Education and other departments. Choose from four intensive programs in the areas of Cultural Awareness, Financial Empowerment, Tribal Safety, or Tribal Sovereignty.

Requirements for Success

Schedule an introductory meeting

Meet with the Department of Education and Human Resources to ask questions, learn about the hiring process, and select an internship program.

Work Permit

Complete work permit

Human Resources can help interested interns fill out the forms required by their school. Along with adhering to maximum work hours and any restrictions, interns must maintain their grades throughout the internship.

Complete introductory curriculum

All programs begin with personality and talent assessments. Interns will also consult with the Department of Education to determine if work experience credit qualifies toward graduation requirements.

Cultural Awareness

Cultural Awareness

Learn the history and culture of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians and see how Tribal government works to promote and protect our legacy. With curriculum from the Cultural Resource Management Department, interns will explore Archives Management, Digital Data Management, Serrano Ancestral Territory, and Historic Preservation.

Financial Empowerment

Financial Empowerment

Study behavioral finance and financial planning while working alongside San Manuel Staff. In this program, interns will deepen their understanding of key financial areas including Casino Finance, Tribal Finance, and Investment Strategies.

Tribal Safety

Work directly with several safety-related departments at San Manuel to support Tribal health and safety plans. This course will provide interns with the specialized training and skills needed for success in Emergency Medical, Emergency Management, Fire Department, and Department of Public Safety teams.

Tribal Sovereignty

Tribal Sovereignty

Examine the origins, concepts, and practice of “Sovereignty” while learning how to help others maintain Tribal community-government rights and responsibilities. In addition to working with Intergovernmental Affairs (IGA) and Tribal Court, interns in this program will have curriculum delivered by Tribal Citizen, Deron Marquez, and other invited speakers.

Serrano Language Revitalization Program

With Curriculum provided by the San Manuel Education Department, program participants will have the opportunity to learn Serrano and create opportunities to help strengthen the language within the greater San Manuel Tribal community. This program contains four main content areas for you to choose from or mix and match, based on your interests: Language Teaching, Resource Development, Language Research, and Community History.
